The Ultimate Moving Packing Checklist
Are you preparing for a big move?
There’s a lot to think about. De-cluttering, cleaning, packing and moving is a massive operation, and it can be hard to keep on top of it all. Moving to a new home is stressful, but if you plan it right, it doesn’t have to be.
With our moving packing checklist, you can make your move a smooth one.
Our Moving Packing Checklist
If you’re getting ready to move, follow these steps to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.
Start Early
It’s easy to leave everything to the last minute, but once you get started, you’re suddenly hit by the realization of how much you have to do. Save yourself the stress and start preparing a 4-8 weeks prior to your move.
Contact moving companies to get a quote on a moving plan, and call your utility providers to let them know when you’ll be leaving the property. If you require any extra help with moving vehicles, you might need to contact specialist companies.
If you have any pets, it’s a good idea to have them stay somewhere else during the move. Otherwise, it can be quite stressful both for them and you. If you don’t have any friends or family, who can take them, try a kennel.
Purge
It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be taking absolutely everything from your current home with you to the new one. A move provides an excellent opportunity to get rid of things that you don’t need.
Go through your closets and cupboards and try and pick out things that you can afford to leave behind. Be ruthless and remember that the more junk you shed, the easier the move will be. If there are things that you don’t need to keep but can’t bear to throw away, consider selling them or donating them to foundations.
Buy Supplies
Once you’ve worked out how much stuff you’ll be moving, the next step is to go out and buy supplies.
As well as the obvious boxes and tape, you’ll need moving blankets for furniture and bubble wrap for valuables. Don’t forget folders and binders for organizing and storing important documents. Otherwise, they could easily get lost in the move.
Finally, you’ll need lots of labels and markers so that you can label everything you pack. That way, unpacking will be a lot easier. Otherwise, you’ll have to open every box up to see what’s inside before you can put it in the right room.
Defrost the Fridge
Defrosting the refrigerator is an important task that can easily be forgotten. The problem is, it can take a while, so it’s important to get it out of the way early on. Ideally, you should get it out of the way around two weeks before you move.
If you have any gas-powered equipment or appliances, be sure to safely drain those, too.
