Moving this Summer? Start Planning Now!

Summers are always the busiest time of the year for movers. Families are always eager to move while the weather is warm, and while the kids are out of school. If you are planning on moving this summer, it doesn’t have to be stressful; here are some tips to help you plan.

  • Start calling early

As soon as you know you are moving, begin talking to movers. Too often, customers wait until their house sells to start talking to movers. In the summer, you have to start at least 6-8 weeks before your move. Some parts of the country are already at capacity for the next 7 weeks, so it’s very important to begin planning for your move. Even local moves need to be planned about 4-6 weeks ahead of time. Local movers reach capacity just like with long distance movers. The best thing to do is to set a tentative move date with your mover of choice. It’s easy to adjust your move date as your plans come together; it’s much more difficult to find a quality mover who’s available on short notice!

  • Try to avoid the end of the month and Fridays

Year round, the majority of moves happen near the end of the month. Typically, this is when leases or contracts are up, so this is when most people like to move. Also, most people prefer to move on Fridays, so they can have the weekend for settling in. Since the summer is the busiest time, the last week of the month as well as Friday’s book the quickest. If you have some flexibility, choosing an earlier move date or a Monday or Tuesday can open availability, as well as giving you a fresher, more rested move crew.

  • Get in home estimates

Meeting with a move representative in person can be one of the best decisions you’ll make regarding your move. Not only can they give you accurate pricing, they can give you details about available move dates and delivery windows. Estimators are trained in estimating the weight of your furniture, and estimating the number of boxes you’ll need for packing. Be sure to start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed and rushed!

  • Plan on longer delivery windows

During the summer, nearly all movers will extend their delivery windows to reflect the increased number of moves. This planning helps ensure that shipments are not delivered late, and that we can make the dates promised to our customers. Make sure you plan hotel stays and travel plans accordingly.
